The Ateneo Grade School student is more than just someone attending classes, concerned solely in his cognitive growth.
Although academic work as in any institution would be of high importance to the growth and development of competencies, the development of the Ateneo Grade School student can only take place with a program that addresses his other equally important faculties. Thus, it is through the co-curricular activity experience that the Ateneo Grade School student can actualize the thrust of a well – rounded development.
Recognizing that the ATENEO grade school students represent a spectrum of interests and inclinations, the co-curricular program takes a conscious effort at establishing a broad range of co-curricular clubs, with more than 70 CLUBS for both the Middle School and Primary School to suit the varying choices, talents , and advocacies of the students.
This way, whether the students prefer to be involved in sports or drama, in writing or socially oriented endeavors, in outdoor life or indoor activities, there will always be a club that could provide opportunities to further develop their skills and talents.
The co-curricular program in a large sense also serves as a laboratory of life where what is learned in the classroom context can be applied in practical terms yet be used as a further teachable opportunity.
The clubs are bridges to prepare the Ateneo Grade School student for continuing development of his niche as he moves up the academic ladder. It is no wonder then that quite a number of students choose to remain in clubs of the same fields of interest as they move to high school. This makes the co- curricular program a breeding ground of luminaries in varying fields. The Ateneo Grade school has a RICH history of famous talents among various fields who trace their humble beginnings in the clubs that they participated in during their formative years in the Ateneo Grade School. To this day, we continue honoring this proud tradition.
This is why students are encouraged to pursue joining the co-curricular activities that interest them. But at the same time they are also encouraged to develop a modicum of openness is exploring new and unfamiliar fields. Because it is only through this sense of openness that they shall be able to discover their other hidden competencies. The term “co-curricular” as opposed to “ extra-curricular” was a purposive attempt at raising the value of out-of-the- classroom learning. Because the co-curricular program has in its unique features the element of “outdoor” learning, it serves as a constructive outlet for ideas and energy that complement classroom learning. To underscore its value, a Jesuit once remarked that students learn a lot more even outside the classroom. A humbling thought for educators indeed but also a reassuring one for the school that gives intrinsic value in the contribution of the co-curricular program to the development of their student’s talent and leadership skill. ü
