Ateneo de Manila High School seniors Joseph John Milla and Jose Daniel Berba, both from 4N,won 1st place in the recently concluded Jude-n-IT Competition held at Saint Jude Catholic School in San Miguel, Manila last August 26, 2011.
Sponsored by Saint Jude Catholic School, the competition pitted twelve high schools from all over Metro Manila against one another. Each school sent two teams, consisting of two students per team, except for Ateneo de Manila High School, which only sent one team.
Milla and Berba made it to the final round by passing the individual examination given in the elimination round. The average of each participant determined which schools would make it to the final round. Along with Ateneo de Manila High School, Chiang Kai Shek High School, St. Stephen High School, Philippine Cultural College – Caloocan, Grace Christian College, and Don Bosco Technical College were among the top 6 schools that passed the elimination round. A mini exhibit with a symposium on the latest IT trends and issues followed.
The final round was based on the American quiz show “Jeopardy,” with teams selecting a category and score value. Categories included History and Basic Concept Terminologies, Hardware and PC Troubleshooting, Software and Operating Systems, Programming Languages, Database Systems and Current Trends and Internet. Each correct answer earned the team the corresponding point value of the question. Conversely, the same value was deducted from the team’s score for incorrect responses. Chiang Kai Shek High School led during the first part of the final round but the AHS’ Milla and Berba managed to beat their scores a few rounds later.
Chiang Kai Shek High School placed second to Ateneo de Manila High School, which placed first. Don Bosco Technical College won 3rd place. According to the organizers, the quiz bee aimed to bring together the brightest minds in a friendly competition about Information Technology.
